Designated by the United Nations General Assembly, World Bicycle Day is a global initiative that promotes the advocacy and celebration of bicycles worldwide. To commemorate this special day, Northumberland Tourism has launched a new Bike Repair Station pilot project to enhance recreational cycling and boost the visitor economy in Northumberland.

Northumberland Tourism has acquired five state-of-the-art Bike Repair Posts from Ontario-based manufacturer Greenspoke. These freestanding stations each include a full set of tools for cyclists to make any needed adjustments or any unexpected repairs, to help keep rolling along. Stations are being strategically installed in various communities across the county, near or along popular cycling routes. These locations were determined based on consultations with cycling club members, representatives of Sustainable Cobourg’s Bicycle Action Committee, and host municipalities.

“Cycling plays an important role in the tourism and recreation mix of Northumberland,” states Dan Borowec, Director of Economic Development, Planning and Strategic Initiatives. “Installing bike repair stations adds critical support for all levels of cyclists. Easily accessible and strategically located throughout Northumberland, they are a welcoming resource to our ever-growing cycling community.”

This initiative aims to foster a vibrant cycling community while attracting cycling enthusiasts from far and wide to explore the picturesque landscapes and charming towns of Northumberland. In partnership with participating area municipalities, bike repair stations are being placed in the following locations:

“The installation of these bike repair stations will provide a valuable resource for cyclists in Northumberland,” commented Borowec. “Whether it’s a quick tire fix or a more substantial repair, these stations will enable cyclists to keep their bikes in top running order, ensuring a safe and enjoyable cycling experience.”

Northumberland Tourism encourages both residents and visitors to take advantage of these new bike repair stations and contribute to a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation culture within the region. This project further supports the County’s broader mission of promoting regional tourism activity, enriching the local economy, and fostering a deep appreciation for cycling in Northumberland.
